The twenty-fifth annual South African Music Awards will see the introduction of a stand-alone reggae category in the form of Best Reggae Album.
Reggae enthusiasts and musicians around the country will be glad to know that the South African Music Awards will now feature a reggae category. The Recording Institute of South Africa (RiSA) has announced that the twenty-fifth edition of the highly anticipated awards ceremony will include a Best Reggae Album category.
RiSA notes that the changes were implemented in an attempt to make the awards more inclusive and to accommodate the current landscape of the South African music industry. Previously, the awards had a Best RnB/Soul & Reggae album category, which will now be adjusted to accommodate the reggae genre in a stand-alone category.
In an article published by local media on Tuesday, 11 December 2018, RiSA CEO, Naledi Sibisi, commented:
“We always strive to present an award ceremony that reflects the direction that the music industry takes. We remain responsive, agile and decisive when it comes to ensuring that the industry feels represented… These changes are welcomed and celebrated and we look forward to honouring worthy musicians, come the time for nominations.”
The decision has been welcomed by many, as reggae is gaining traction in the country, having witnessed an upswing in recent years.
