During the listening session of her new album, Songs In The Key Of Love, singer-songwriter, Berita, detailed the inspiration behind the songs, noting that the collaborations were all organic.
Berita’s fourth album, Songs In The Key Of Love, marks her first independent album. At the listening session hosted in Sandton on Thursday, 27 February 2020, which JustNje attended, Berita spoke about the inspiration behind the 13-track album. She explained how most of the tracks on the album were created, saying, “I love the idea of just me and my guitar and everything else… So, most of the songs started with me and my guitar.”
On the album, Berita featured more artists than she has on any of her other albums. During the listening session, she noted that most of the features came about organically. This was the case for her current single, Siyathandana, featuring Amanda Black. The two stars initially met in East London in the Eastern Cape province, where they were neighbours, and the collaboration was eight years in the making,
Berita stated, “We had always wanted to do a song, and I had this idea for this song. I had just a chorus and I had written this on the keyboard, and Amanda Black came to mind. Like I say, I have come to let the songs choose where they want to live and she said ‘come to my house and let us work on it,’” and that was how Siyathandana came into being.
In speaking about why she considers this her most developed body of work to date, Berita compared working on the album to working on a painting. She reflected on the process, stating, “I felt like a painter with this project. I felt like I am telling my own story, and I am coming into myself and it felt right.”
The album is available for purchase on Apple Music.
