Bishop Maponga divides viewers following latest episode of Abafundisi

Published on

Bishop Joshua Maponga has sparked conversation amongst Abafundisi viewers, with some praising him for his unapologetic opinions and others expressing outrage at his allegedly homophobic views.

The latest episode of Moja Love’s Abafundisi, which aired on Tuesday, 26 May 2020, saw Bishop Maponga discussing Africanism and how Black Africans will continuously face hardships going forward. The episode also saw him sharing his opinion on homosexuality, which he claims is a condition that should be cured, rather than welcomed.

Viewers were quick to begin a social media discussion on the Bishop, with many conflicted on how they felt about him. Tebogo Maphoto stated, “Bishop Maponga, intellectual, unapologetic and unconventional. But then says being gay is a condition. God for us all.” Others agreed with Maphoto, claiming that it was not his place to judge, but rather, to accept all as God is the only one who should pass judgement.

Fans of Bishop Maponga also came to his defence, with many advising those who opposed his opinions to stop watching the show. Letlhogonolo Mooketsi tweeted, “Bishop Maponga asked all the questions that we should all be asking! We just need to eliminate the fear of dissecting ‘the truth’ and the fear of rejecting a God that is completely foreign to us. Bishop Maponga is leading the way for us!”
