ABC Network has announced the prequel series, Mixed-ish, to the popular American comedy, Black-ish, which will premiere on Tuesday, 24 September 2019.

The new sitcom will recount Rainbow Johnson’s experience of growing up in a mixed-race family during the 1980s. Rainbow’s parents, Paul and Alicia, decide to relocate the family from a hippie commune to the suburbs, in order for their children to have better lives. As they struggle to find their place in the new community, Rainbow and her siblings struggle to identify with either their white or black peers. According to ABC, “This family’s experiences illuminate the challenges of finding one’s own identity when the rest of the world can’t decide where you belong.”

The trailer for the upcoming series opens with Rainbow as an adult, sitting down with her family to detail her childhood. Her children are surprised to discover that her far-fetched stories turned out to be facts, as she recounts her life as a mixed-race young girl whose family’s cult was shut down by the American government, causing them to retreat to a normal life in the American suburbs.

The sitcom forms part of the show, Black-ish, as well as Grown-ish, which follows Rainbow’s eldest daughter, Zoey, as she navigates through her college years. Mixed-ish tackles subjects such as racism, however, it is portrayed with light-hearted humour.

Mixed-ish premieres on Tuesday, 24 September 2019 in the USA, with the premiere date yet to be announced for South African audiences.
