Boity Thulo opts to focus on SAMA nod instead of backlash

Boity Thulo has opted to focus on the positive amid the backlash that she has been receiving for the nomination of her EP, 4463, in the Best Hip Hop Album category at the SAMAs.

Boity Thulo took to Twitter on Wednesday, 19 May 2021, to celebrate her nomination at the twenty-seventh South African Music Awards (SAMAs). Thulo has been nominated in the Best Hip Hop Album category for her debut EP, 4463. While Thulo and her camp might be elated by the nomination, more so in light of her and Nadia Nakai being the only two female rappers in the category, some Twitter users were not as welcoming of the nomination.

On the social media platform, a multitude of users criticised the nomination. Some claimed that her EP consists of singles that were released prior to 2020, therefore, it does not qualify for a nomination. Others went on to criticise and question her status as a rapper. Thulo was further criticised because Cassper Nyovest’s latest album, Any Minute Now (A.M.N), did not make the cut.

Nyovest is believed to have not submitted his album for consideration, as he has been vocal about his boycott of the awards ceremony. However, that did not stop Twitter users from using the fact to ridicule Thulo.
