In a recent interview on CliffCentral, media personality, Bonang Matheba, shared how she uses other popular media personalities’ journeys as templates to direct her career decisions.
On Wednesday, 25 September 2019, Bonang Matheba was one of the guests on the second episode of Gareth Cliff’s feature on CliffCentral, Pure Conversations: A Few Brave Broadcasters. During the almost two-hour long insightful conversation, media personality, Bonang Matheba, detailed how she uses other established media personalities as a template to create her own mark in the media and entertainment space.
In the telling interview, Bonang surprised the panel after Gareth asked who inspires her in the entertainment industry. The Being Bonang reality star claimed that fellow guest, Unathi Nkayi, is one of her inspirations, stating, “In the very, very beginning, I mimicked my career around what Unathi has done and Melanie Bala.” She then detailed the similarities in the beginning of their careers from their start in popular music shows and seamless transition into successful radio careers.
During this moment, Unathi, like the rest of the panel, was surprised by Bonang’s candour. When Gareth asked if Bonang had ever told her, Unathi replied, “I’m speechless. And I have always known the love is there but I have never known that it was this vivid.”
Bonang then detailed how she finds another media personality to help guide the decisions she makes for a career, with every monumental feat she achieves. Besides Unathi, she listed American entertainer, Ryan Seacrest, global musician, Rihanna, and one of the first self-made black female billionaires, Oprah Winfrey.
Looking back at her career, one can see how she mirrored these personalities’ career paths. From the creation of her production company in 2012, to hosting the red carpet of the South African Music Awards, her Woolworths collaboration with her lingerie line, Distraction by Bonang, and most recently, her plans to open a school in Soweto.
