Busiswa criticised for offering champagne to her ancestors

Busiswa has been called out for her supposed disrespect towards tradition and the Xhosa community, after she shared an image of herself offering champagne to her ancestors.

Busiswa took to Instagram on Thursday, 18 February 2021, to share an image of herself performing a ritual for her ancestors, as a way to express her gratitude. The singer’s post showed her setup of traditional items and candles, as well as a bottle of champagne, which is not considered part of the appropriate and traditional offerings. She captioned the post, “Spiritual alignment is a big flex! Don’t forget to take time out every now and find the centre. I’m visiting my hometown to do just that!”

The comments section was filled with mixed feelings from social media users, who were conflicted about the intention of her post. Some felt that it was inappropriate of her to share such an intimate moment between herself and her ancestors, whilst others were proud of her gesture.

Many of the comments highlighted the fact that she had offered champagne to her ancestors, which some regarded as disrespectful. One user commented, “Do it right or don’t do it. Being rich doesn’t mean the ancestors want your champagne.” Another user stated, “I don’t mean [disrespect], but you don’t take pictures in such a strong, deep place.”
