Cardi B, Sho Madjozi and Mary J. Blige win big at 2019 BET Awards

The 2019 BET Awards were held on Sunday, 23 June 2019, at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, with Cardi B and Sho Madjozi named as two of the night’s winners.

Rap sensation Cardi B was the center of attention, opening the show with a blockbuster performance of some of her biggest hits from her massively successful album Invasion of Privacy. Cardi B led the pack with an astounding seven nominations.

The rapper won both Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and Album of the Year for Invasion of Privacy. The album won a Grammy for best rap album, topped the Billboard 200, is certified triple-platinum and spawned five chart-topping singles, namely Bodak Yellow, Bartier Cardi featuring 21 Savage, Be Careful, I Like It featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin and Ring featuring Kehlani.

The Regina King-hosted event also saw South African Xitsonga sensation Sho Madjozi win big, taking home the award in the fan-voted category of Best New International Act, where she was nominated alongside stars like Headie One and Teni.

Rihanna presented Mary J. Blige with the Lifetime Achievement Honour, complimenting her expansive career and welcoming her onto the stage by saying: “Mary J. Blige, you have set the bar for relatable, timeless, classic music. You opened multiple doors for female artists in this industry. On behalf of all the women who came after you, like myself, thank you for being you so we can be comfortable being ourselves.”

Following her thank you speech, Mary J. Blige performed an ample medley, including songs like Real Love and My Life. She was joined on stage by Lil Kim for I Can Love You and by Method Man for You’re All I Need
