The season four finale of The Handmaid’s Tale saw June killing Fred and leaving his body tied up to the wall, as she told Luke that she would leave.
The Handmaid’s Tale is a television series, which is based on the 1985 novel of the same name by Canadian author Margaret Atwood.
The series features a fictional community following a second American civil war, wherein a political society subjects fertile women, called handmaids, to child-bearing slavery.
Elisabeth Moss portrays June Osborne. June was captured while attempting to escape Canada with her husband, Luke, played by O. T. Fagbenle, and her daughter, Hannah, played by Jordana Blake.
Due to June being fertile, she was made a handmaid to Commander Fred Waterford, played by Joseph Fiennes, and his wife, Serena, played by Yvonne Strahovski.
Later on in the show, June was also made a handmaid to Commander Joseph, portrayed by Bradley Whitford.
In the season four finale, fans witnessed June making drastic decisions that would forever change her future. Osborne and a number of women cornered Fred in the woods and beat him to death.
Earlier on in season four, Fred and Serena were put on trial by the Canadian Government for their cruel crimes against June and other handmaids.
However, it was revealed in episode 10 that Fred would remain unpunished as he agreed to share some of Gilead’s secrets, in exchange for his freedom.
June struggled to accept that Fred was a free man, and arranged with Commander Nick and Lawrence to leave Fred in No Man’s Land, where June and other women would finally get their chance at revenge.
Fred was violently killed and his lifeless body left tied to a wall, while a severed finger and his wedding ring were sent back to his wife.
The next morning, June’s husband, Luke, found her bloodied and shattered in their daughter’s room. As Luke kept quiet, June whispered to him, “I know. I am sorry. Just give me five minutes, okay? Just give me five minutes with her, then I will go.”
It remains a mystery where June plans on venturing next, one possibility is that she may have to answer for killing Fred.
However, showrunner, Bruce Miller stated that if June goes through with her exit, it would be her own decision.
Miller further explained, “I very much want it to be her choice, not consequences. Right now, there is no crime. Nobody has any idea what happened. Fred is gone as he was traded. But of course, there will be consequences down the line.”
Another possibility is that June may decide not to leave at all, but everything will be revealed when season five premieres in 2022.
