DJ Maphorisa was one of the many local artists affronted by Jorja Smith’s new song, All Of This, which samples amapiano instrumentations without enlisting a local amapiano producer.
Jorja Smith took to Twitter on Friday, 6 August 2021, to announce the release of her new single, All Of This. The single’s instrumental uses the now signature progression and long drums associated with amapiano. Moreover, Smith shared the release of her single with a phrase coined by the Major League DJz, “Piano to the world.”
On the single, Smith did not work with any popular amapiano producers. Specifically, Smith did not work with any South African amapiano producers, considering that amapiano is arguably a movement that originated in South Africa. Hence, DJ Maphorisa was affronted by Smith, more so due to the fact that through her snubbing the originators of the sound, Smith has technically appropriated the sound and failed to acknowledge, in earnest, the inspiration of her single.
This is a fact which DJ Maphorisa attempted to explain when he wrote, “If you don’t involve us, it’s not amapiano then, trust me. You can’t eat alone on amapiano, it’s a community movement but we don’t mind sharing though.”
