Mzansi Magic premiered its latest local drama series, The Republic, on Sunday, 7 July 2019, which received an outpour of praise from viewers.
The story follows 2009’s president- elect, Kgalema Motlanthe, as he ends his term in office. He is thereafter replaced by President Hendrik Mbuli who leads his presidency riddled with corruption and looting of state funds. Mbuli is then fired from government and makes way for the party’s secretary general, Lufuno, who takes the reins as president. The storyline then follows Present Mulaudzi who previously spent two years fighting corruption and prosecuting those who benefitted from Mbuli’s presidency –including Mbuli.
Fans have expressed their praise for the series, with many stating that the production value and storyline is unlike anything they have seen before on South African television. Malobe Mahlape stated, “Absolutely love everything about it!”, whilst Mabena Ketso commented on the storyline stating, “The snitch is always amongst those who are meant to protect you. It’s about to go down”.
The all-star cast is led by Florence Masebe, who assumes the role of South African President Lufuno, Warren Masemola as Thabang Manaka and Masasa Mbangeni as Bridget Ranaka.
The series is produced by Tshedza Pictures, which also produces the popular drama, The River. Producer Phathu Makwarela took to Twitter to share his gratitude, stating, “A big thank you to the whole cast and crew on The Republic for doing this fun yet daring project. And to all the viewers who gave our first episode last night a YES.”
The Republic airs on Sundays at 20:00 on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161.
