Friends: Three reasons why Rachel Green is the worst

Rachel Green’s characterisation in Friends has recently come under scrutiny, so below we take a look at three reasons why she has been considered the worst.

Friends is still regarded as one of the best television sitcoms in the history of television. The series first premiered in 1994 and concluded after 10 seasons in 2004.

Despite the end of the sitcom’s natural television run being over 18 years ago, it has proven to stand the test of time.

Through reruns on television and its availability on an array of video-on-demand platforms, the show has grown in popularity since it concluded.

As a result, the characterisation of the show’s beloved cast has come under scrutiny, and Rachel Green’s character has been labelled as one of the worst character arcs.

Why did Friends end?

Friends ended in 2004, even though it was still one of the most popular viewing choices at the time. Therefore, when the reason for the shows conclusion was shared, the production stated that they felt like it was visible that the cast was physically growing.

Although watching the actors grow was not the problem, the fact that the characters were growing out of the age where they all hung out at cafes so often, was.

This was corroborated by co-creator Marta Kauffman, who stated, “Everybody was growing up. This is part of why the show had to end. This was no longer that time in your life when your friends are your family. You’re starting your own family.”

Three reasons why Rachel Green is the worst

Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston, was the title character of Friends.

Though the premise of the sitcom was, “Follows the personal and professional lives of six twenty to thirty-something-year-old friends living in Manhattan,” the pilot episode kicked off with Rachel arriving dressed in a wedding dress at the cafe in search of Monica after leaving her fiancé at the altar.

As the protagonist of the sitcom during its natural run, Rachel was beloved for her ditzy personality. However, in the 18 years since the sitcom ended, Rachel has been the character most scrutinised and attacked for her lack of character development in the story.

Despite this, though, in a survey done by British fans of the sitcom with YouGov, Monica Geller came out as the most disliked character, earning five percent of votes in the “favourite character category poll.”

Rachel was touted as the most attractive character, another reason she is considered the worst. She is also considered the worst because of how she treated Monica, and her relationship with Ross. These three reasons are considered the main reasons why Rachel Green was the worst.

1. Rachel’s pretty privilege

Before the common term, “pretty privilege” existed, Rachel Green was one character that embodied the negative connotations of the word.

This was evident in actions like Rachel kissing her boss at the end of her interview, and later getting the job, and her hiring a personal assistant on the basis that she was attracted to him, and nothing else.

Rachel proved that unfortunately, sometimes all you need is your looks to get ahead in life, which in recent years, has become a problematised phenomenon.

2. Rachel’s antagonistic friendship with Monica

Another big reason that Rachel is considered the worst is because of her friendship with Monica and how she treated her throughout the series.

Firstly, though in the pilot episode we see Rachel going to her childhood best friend, we later learn that Rachel bullied Monica in high school.

Secondly, throughout their friendship, it is believed that Rachel constantly took from Monica, and never gave. This is evident in Rachel moving in with Monica, taking back and kissing Ross just moments after Monica and Chandler got engaged, or the fact that Rachel named her daughter Emma; the name that Monica always wanted to give to her daughter.

3. Rachel and Ross’s relationship

One of the most asked questions regarding Friends was whether or not Rachel and Ross would end up together. But the delay of their union can also be blamed on Rachel, since Ross always knew that Rachel was the one.

Rachel, on the other hand, blew hot and cold throughout the 10 seasons. When Ross was single, she did not want him, but as soon as he found someone else, Rachel waited until the last minute to break up his wedding.

Moreover, her eventual relationship with Ross in the series finale is regarded as another reason she is the worst, since it undid all the work she put into becoming independent and self-sufficient.
