The Vampire Diaries’ conclusion is still a matter of fascination for fans, as it was filled with happy reunions, tear-jerking moments and a well-rounded series finale.
In 2009, The CW premiered the teen-drama series, The Vampire Diaries. The hit show, which is one of the most popular series from the network, is still being consumed by old and new fans after Netflix made all eight seasons available on the paid-subscription video-on-demand platform.
The Vampire Diaries concluded its run in 2017, with a series finale that was filled with nail-biting moments, tearjerkers, and a well-rounded conclusion that saw most of its leading cast get the happily-ever-after ending they deserved.
Moreover, the conclusion also saw the return of Nina Dobrev, who left after season six.
Why did The Vampire Diaries end?
The end of Vampire Diaries was foreshadowed through the departure of the show’s lead, Nina Dobrev in 2015. Dobrev played the main character and central love interest, Elena Gilbert.
Her decision to leave the show was fuelled by her desire to explore more mature roles as she did not want to play a teenager anymore.
While the show’s ratings did decline following her exit, it was not for this reason that show was cancelled.
The show was cancelled due to decisions taken by the producers of the show, which Vampire Diaries showrunner Julie Plec attributed to logistical and contractual matters.
How does Vampire Diaries end?
Considering that Nina Dobrev had left the show after the season six finale, the biggest question was whether she would return for the series finale.
This is after Elena was magically put to sleep, after her life was intertwined with best friend Bonnie Bennett, played by Kat Graham.
For the two seasons that Elena was in her magical sleep, the story pivoted to focus on Bonnie and Caroline Forbes, played by Candice King.
As a result of this, the ending featured Bonnie saving the day, once again. This is after Elena’s doppelganger, Katherine attempts to destroy Mystic Falls through the use of hellfire.
However, Bonnie manages to stop this by using her powers and that of the collective of the Bennett women to send the hellfire back.
Thereafter, Stefan sacrifices his life to ensure that Katherine dies from the hellfire. In the final scenes, we then see how the lives of the other characters were impacted by Stefan’s sacrifice.
What happens to Bonnie Bennett at the end of The Vampire Diaries?
Following defeating Katherine and preventing the destruction of Mystic Falls, Bonnie Bennett makes peace with the death of her lover, Enzo and not being able to reunite with him.
Thereafter, she decides to not live her life mourning his passing, but to live her life to the fullest. In the last scenes with Bonnie, we see her getting ready to travel the world.
She does not end up with a romantic interest by the end of the show, however, seeing her make the decision to focus on making herself happy is one that left fans with a smile on their faces.
What happened to Caroline Forbes at the end of The Vampire Diaries?
Caroline Forbes started the series finale of The Vampire Diaries on a high, as she and Stefan get married and enjoy a few hours of happiness before an explosion by Katherine breaks the happy matrimonial.
Thereafter, after Stefan sacrifices himself, he has his final meeting with Elena before she comes back to life.
His final words, “I will love her forever, too”, were for his new wife. Caroline is left with the Salvatore mansion, which she converts into a school and appoints Jeremy as a teacher.
What happens to Elena and Damon at the end of The Vampire Diaries?
After receiving a second chance in life, a human Elena decides to enrol in medical school. Thereafter, she and Damon get to live happily-ever-after together by growing old and eventually dying.
Following their deaths, Elena is able to be reunited with her parents and Damon is able to reunite with his brother, Stefan.
Their union at the end of the show’s run was predicted by many fans, especially in light of the real-life romance that the two leading actors had while working on The Vampire Diaries.
The Vampire Diaries had a successful eight-season run. This is despite the departure of lead character Elena Gilbert during the sixth season of the show in 2015.
With her departure, the series then pivoted to focus on fan-favourite Bonnie Bennett and Caroline Forbes story arcs.
Despite the pivot in main story arcs, the show still remained popular with fans. However, it was a full-circle moment to see Nina Dobrev return to reprise her role as Elena for the series finale.
Moreover, the heart-warming conclusion of Bonnie’s storyline is still lauded, along with all the other characters getting their happily-ever-after.
