ProVerb has confirmed that he has concluded his voiceovers for the upcoming episode of Idols SA, which suggests that Somizi Mhlongo will feature on the episode.
ProVerb took to Twitter on Tuesday, 3 August 2021, to confirm that he has concluded the voiceovers for Idols South Africa’s (SA) Theatre Week, which is the next episode. ProVerb is the host and executive producer of the show, hence his confirmation of concluding the voiceovers for Theatre Week suggests that the episode will air as it was scheduled to air.
The above implies that fans will watch an episode with embattled personality, Somizi Mhlongo. However, it is important to contextualise the possible reasoning for that. Idols SA is shot in two parts; the first part consists of the pre-recorded episodes. This includes the auditions, Theatre Week and the announcement of the top 32.
Considering that Theatre Week was shot before the scandal in relation to Mhlongo and his estranged husband, Mohale Motaung, the chances of pushing back the Theatre Week and top 32 announcement was minimal. This is as the events have been recorded and the show is currently preparing for the beginning of the live shows. In light of this fact, the only time that Idols SA can realistically “cancel” Mhlongo from the show is during the live aspect of the show.
Therefore, it will be of interest to find out if the upcoming episode of Idols SA will be boycotted, or whether viewers will watch the show only to condemn it and the channel for continuing to support Mhlongo amid the recent accusations of abuse levelled against him. Neither Idols SA nor Mzansi Magic have released a statement on the matter.
Currently, the only broadcaster to do so was the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). It issued a contentious statement which read, “The SABC can confirm that Metro FM’s management met with Mr. Somizi Mhlongo and he has requested to take some time off from work. Management has granted Mr. Mhlongo permission to do so.”
