I Am Bishop I Makamu: Viewers react harshly to series premiere

New reality series, I Am Bishop I Makamu, premiered last night, leaving fans disappointed at the religious leader’s apparent boastfulness throughout the episode.

The first episode of Moja Love’s I Am Bishop I Makamu premiered on Tuesday, 16 July 2019, and saw the religious leader give insight into both his personal and professional life. The audience was introduced to his wife, Hloniphile Makamu, and witnessed the public’s reaction to the Bishop’s presence when entering his ministries or preaching to people individually.

Viewers took to social media to voice their concerns about the show, with many stating that Bishop Makamu’s character comes off as arrogant and boisterous, rather than empathetic and humble, as religious leaders should be. Zimmie Sibisi shared a tweet stating, “One thing I know is that the Bible says do not boast. What a sad world we live in church has become a business now”. Godwin Ratikane was also one of the many to weigh in, commenting, “I don’t trust this one… I just think, the minute you look out for cameras and so forth, the holy spirit runs away.”

The reality series is described as an introduction to the man who a few people have access to away from the pulpit. Bishop I Makamu is known to many as a religious leader who preaches to his congregation about Christianity, empowering them to its teachings through his sermons.

I Am Bishop I Makamu airs on Tuesdays at 22:00 on Moja Love, DStv channel 157.
