Idols SA set to commence with top 16 announcement

Idols SA has confirmed that the upcoming episode will mark the first of the top 16 selections, as the judges announce who will be going through to the live shows.

Mzansi Magic’s Idols South Africa (SA) took to Twitter on Thursday, 12 August 2021, to share a teaser of the upcoming episode. The teaser confirmed that the upcoming episode will mark the beginning of the two-part top 16 announcement for season 17. Currently, the show has confirmed that 30 hopefuls were chosen from the group performances from Theatre Week.

From those 30 hopefuls, the upcoming two episodes will wilt them down to eight girls and eight boys who will compete to be named the Idols SA season 17 winner. Moreover, the continued airing of pre-recorded episodes means that embattled judge, Somizi Mhlongo will continue to make an appearance. Mhlongo, who is currently going through a legal battle following the breakdown of his marriage, has taken some time off the show.

Mhlongo has been accused of being emotionally and physically abusive towards his estranged husband, Mohale Motaung. In light of the accusations and backlash, Mhlongo has stepped away. His last appearance on the show is scheduled for Sunday, 22 August 2021, this is unless he returns in the coming week as the matter has publicly died down.

Idols SA airs on Sundays on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161, at 17:30.
