Idols SA: The judges introduce a plot twist in the group round of auditions

Sunday night’s episode of Idols SA saw the judges surprise the contestants with a change in the format of the group round of auditions.

The latest episode of Mzansi Magic’s Idols SA, which aired on Sunday, 4 August 2019, saw the judges, comprising Unathi, Somizi and Randall, announce to the contestants that they will be versing each other in groups which will not include any harmonization or choreography. Randall stated, “In the past, some good singers were sabotaged by the bad singers, and some of the bad singers were able to hide away behind the backing of harmonies. Well this year, to forgo any of that, we have come up with a plan.” The contestants were made to choose a song from eight options, thereafter the judges allocated them into groups based on their vocals and song choice.

Viewers of the show took to social media to voice their grievances, with many not agreeing with the judge’s choices. Phumu Osei stated, “These judges don’t know anything. Yep! I said it. Good singers have been sent home while some given second changes when they didn’t deserve it. If nobody fights for you as their favourite then you’re out. Is this a music show? What’s the rush with cutting numbers anyway?”. Mbali Hlabiki also commented, “This year’s group performances are actually VERY UNFAIR.”

Next week’s episode of Idols SA sees the 32 hopefuls battle it out for the Top 16 spots. With the twin sisters, Viggy and Virginia, and brothers, Nolo and Thoriso, still in the competition, the fight to the live rounds will be filled with drama and excitement.

Idols SA airs Sundays at 17:30 on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161.
