Idols SA: Top 16 boys perform cover songs for live show

Idols SA’s Sunday night episode saw the top 16 boys covering some of the most notable cover songs for the first live round of the singing competition.

Idols SA’s latest episode, which aired on Mzansi Magic on Sunday, 20 September 2020, saw the top 16 boys taking to the stage for their first live performances. The new format of the show saw no audience members in the auditorium, with only the judges to provide feedback. The production team equipped the judges with an applause button, allowing them to generate a cheering sound to encourage the singers as they performed.

The contestants were tasked with choosing songs that are considered ”Best Cover Songs,” which have been revived and made famous by the original singer and the cover artist. The contestants’ song choices were; Qhawe with Otis Redding’s Try A Little Tenderness, Brandon with Calum Scott’s Dancing On My Own, Mr Music with Etta James’ All I Could Do Was Cry, Succedor with Destiny Child’s Emotion, Jooma with Luther Vandross’ Always and Forever, Ethan with Nina Simone’s Feeling Good, Zahn-Reece with The Carpenters and Luther Vandross’ Superstar, and ZanoThando with Elvis Presley’s I Got A Woman.
