Is Disney Plus available in South Africa?

Disney Plus is currently not available in South Africa, as questioned by many ahead of the premiere of Beyoncé’s Black Is King film on the subscription channel.

Disney Plus is a subscription channel from Disney that premieres some of the most popular films and productions. However, the popularity of Disney Plus in South Africa emerged in July 2020. This was after the announcement that Beyoncé’s then much-awaited film, Black Is King, was set to premiere on the platform.

Black Is King was cited as Beyoncé’s love letter to Africa, which was inspired by her 2019-released album of the same name. The album was inspired by her involvement in the adaptation of the popular Disney animated film, Lion King, where she played the character of adult Nala.

When news of the premiere of the film was shared, South Africans, and Africans at large, attempted to find out if they would be able to watch the film’s debut. However, Disney Plus is currently not available in South Africa. When the fact was made public, South Africans were up in arms. However, MultiChoice then announced that it would air the film on its platform a day after its official premiere on Disney Plus.
