Episode five of 1923 will be out on 5 February 2023 after the series returns from its mid-season hiatus.
Taylor Sheridan and the team behind Yellowstone have made many spin-off shows, including 1923, that expand the world of the Dutton family and their ranch.
1923 took a hiatus after the fourth episode of the show premiered and it will only continue with the story in the fifth episode, which is not out yet.
The Yellowstone spin-offs
Yellowstone certainly became the most successful show from Paramount Network and from Taylor Sheridan in the last few years.
Thus, both parties have decided to expand the Yellowstone universe to include spin-offs like 1883, 1923, 6666, and 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, which is still in the works.
The first spin-off, 1883, and its sequel, 1923, both serve to fill in the missing gaps in the history of the Yellowstone ranch and the Dutton family in their generational struggle to keep control of their land. 6666, on the other hand, explores the lives of cowboys all around Texas.
Is episode 5 of 1923 out?
1923 may just be one of the Yellowstone spin-offs, but this does not mean that Taylor Sheridan and his team have skimped on any of the finer details.
This show picks up where its predecessor, 1883, left off and follows earlier members of the Dutton family in the early 20th century.
This time around, the members of the Dutton family are played by stars like Harrison Ford (Jacob Dutton) and Helen Mirren (Cara Dutton).
The narrative also takes place during a time in history when droughts, as well as the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression were all top of mind for ranchers in the west.
The first episode of 1923 premiered on Paramount Plus on 18 December 2022 and since then, fans of the show have gotten used to subsequent episodes premiering every Sunday, as shown below:
1923 episode | Release date |
Episode 1: “1923” | 18 December 2022 |
Episode 2: “Nature’s Empty Throne” | 25 December 2022 |
Episode 3: “The War Has Come Home” | 1 January 2023 |
Episode 4: “War and the Turquoise Tide” | 8 January 2023 |
However, this schedule was interrupted following the release of the fourth episode on 8 January 2023, for a mid-season hiatus.
The fifth episode of the season will only be released almost a month later, on Sunday, 5 February 2023. Furthermore, the final three episodes will then premiere every Sunday from there.
Where did episode four of 1923 leave off?
Yellowstone and its spin-offs are known for the nail-biting tension and complicated plots that play out throughout the seasons of the shows.
In the case of the first four episodes of 1923, audiences have already seen many deaths, growing tensions, and diabolical plots.
This includes the fact that John Dutton Senior was shockingly killed off just before the show’s hiatus and the fact that Spencer finally read Cara’s letters.
This has left fans of the show wondering whether this information will be enough to convince him to return to the ranch in the next part of the show.
What to expect from the fifth episode of 1923
On a lighter note, the fourth episode of 1923 did have some positive outcomes for the characters. Firstly Jacob is heavily wounded, but he is alive, and the same can be said for Jack and Liz.
However, Donald Whitfield was moving in on the Yellowstone ranch, and fans can expect to see how the family gets around this in the episodes to come.
It is also evident that Spencer will have to return home once he has read all the letters from Cara, but it is not so clear whether Alexandra will come with him or what state they will find the ranch in.
Is 1923 as good as Yellowstone and 1883?
When the first episode of 1923 aired, about 7.4 million people tuned in to see if it would be as good as the original show and its prequel.
However, now that the first four episodes of the first season have aired, it is clear that 1923 can stand on its own in the Yellowstone franchise.
Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren’s performances in the lead roles ground the show and it has been received very positively by audiences overall.
This is reflected in the show’s’ 91 percent critic rating and 75 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as the 8.6 score on IMDb.
In the end, it seems like the reported $30 to $35 million budget for every episode of the show was well spent in ensuring that it lived up to Yellowstone and 1883.
