Hulu is currently blocked in South Africa, with the only way to access it being through applications that can create a different IP address.
Hulu is a paid subscription on-demand streaming platform founded in the United States of America (USA). The platform is owned by the Walt Disney Company and Comcast. Part of the programming available on the platform are shows from HBO Max, CINEMAX, STARZ and Showtime. This is over and above programming from ESPN Plus and Disney Plus.
Due to the growing popularity of streaming platforms like Hulu, with each offering some kind of content which is unavailable on the other platforms, there has been a demand for Hulu to be available globally. This is as the platform has made it clear that currently, “a Hulu subscription is intended for use by members of a single U.S. household. Therefore, you will need a U.S.-issued form of payment when you sign up.”
Moreover, Hulu further clarified, “Hulu and Hulu (No Ads) subscribers are able to stream anywhere in the U.S. — including Puerto Rico and U.S. military bases.” Therefore, Hulu is not directly available to people outside of the USA and US military bases. However, there is an alternative for non-US-based people who are looking to make use of Hulu.
People have the option to change their IP address in order to access platforms like Hulu from their countries. An Internet Protocol (IP) address refers to the unique address which can identify one’s device and location. Therefore, with a change in one’s IP address, an individual can access data and platforms which are not available in the country.
This can be achieved through a Virtual Private Network (VPN). On the landing page of PureVPN, it states, “A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a service that protects your privacy and sensitive data by creating an encrypted tunnel and masking your IP address. VPNs let you use public Wi-Fi safely, hide your browsing activity, access restricted websites, etc.”
