Strange World was released on Disney Plus just over a month after it premiered in theatres, and it is still available to stream on the platform.
Strange World is a Walt Disney Animation Studios (Disney) sci-fi animation film about of a family of explorers that sets out on a new adventure.
Even though this film bombed after it was released in theatres, it was still released on the Disney Plus streaming service and has now actually become quite popular on this platform. It should become a favourite with audiences and critics moving forward.
About Strange World
Strange World is Disney’s newest sci-fi adventure animation from the minds of Don Hall and Qui Nguyen, who have previously collaborated on Raya and the Last Dragon.
From the moment that the trailer of Strange World hit the screens of viewers, it was apparent that Don Hall and Qui Nguyen drew a lot of inspiration from Disney’s resurgence in the 90s, but also from old-school pulp magazines with quirky visuals and easy pacing.
Strange World was officially released in the United States on 23 November 2022. The film follows the somewhat disjointed family of explorers, The Clades, and their rag-tag crew as they explore the Strange World for the first time.
Is Strange World on Disney Plus?
Even though Strange World seemed like a promising box-office entry for Disney in the last quarter of 2022, the film turned out to be somewhat unsuccessful.
Initially, it was estimated that Strange World would earn between $30 million to $40 million in the first few days after its release.
However, in the end it had one of the worst opening weekends of any Disney film in the last few years and only brought in about $18.6 million.
The international release of the film did not go any better and the film reportedly ran at a loss of over $100 million for the company.
This was shocking, because Disney family films that are released over the Thanksgiving period usually turn out to be the biggest hits of the year at the box-office.
Fortunately, after the film was released on the Disney Plus streaming platform just over a month after its theatrical release on 23 December 2022, the tides seemed to turn for Strange World.
During its first week on Disney Plus, Strange world quickly moved to the number one spot for the most streamed film on the platform and it ended the year on a high as the most-watched film on the platform.
Fortunately, it is still one of the most-watched movies, even now in 2023.
The film will remain on Disney Plus for subscribers to stream at their leisure and the hope is that this renewed interest in the film will also help it earn a positive reputation with audiences and critics moving forward.
Is Strange World worth the watch?
Although Strange World did not do as well as expected in the box-office, this is not a reflection of the quality of the actual film, but rather of the amount of marketing that was done to promote the film prior to its release.
Overall, although the screenplay may be lacking some substance, reviews of the film have spoken positively about the beautiful visuals and excellent voice acting in the film.
Strange World has earned an audience score of 66 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, a rating of 5.6 out of 10 on IMDb, and a Metascore of 65 on Metacritic.
