In a wide-ranging interview with InStyle editor-in-chief Laura Brown, the living legend discusses motherhood and the journey to learning to love her body.
Musician and actress Janet Jackson is the cover star of InStyle’s Beauty Issue, and the 52-year-old touches on various aspects of her personal life. In the interview, the iconic popstar delves into her life as a single mother as well as how she has learned to love her body. Jackson notes that at this point in her life, she knows who she is and what she wants.
The living legend admits that growing up in the limelight, she was always criticised for her body, with people saying she was too big at one point or too small, so it took her a while to truly feel comfortable in her skin.
“I remember growing up and being in this business was always this important thing because it was the thing, and you have to be a certain size. You had to be thin as an entertainer. Stupid crap like that. That’s just this business I’m in. I think it’s changed, thank God,” she says. “People are more accepting of others, which is the way it should’ve been from the jump. That can really mess with you.”
She continues to say that she is now more secure than ever with her body but admits that it took her decades to reach this point. She believes that it has a lot to do with experience and growing older.
Speaking on being a mother to her 20-month old son Eissa Al Mana, Jackson says that she has a very tight schedule and spent a great deal of last year on the road with him. She adds that she feels most beautiful when she’s with her son because she believes that he is a much-needed gift that God allowed her to have at her age.
