Idols SA surprised fans when it introduced a guest judge for the live performances, in light of Somizi Mhlongo’s previously confirmed break from the show.
ProVerb took to Twitter on Sunday, 29 August 2021, to confirm Lady Du as the first guest judge for the live performance segment on Idols South Africa (SA). The introduction of the guest judges during the live performances is one that is not common for Idols SA. However, the decision is a response to the recent events faced by embattled resident judge, Somizi Mhlongo. Mhlongo stands accused of emotional and physical abuse by his estranged husband, Mohale Motaung.
When the leaked audio first circulated, various brands and productions that are affiliated with Mhlongo were pressured to take action against the personality. Thereafter, Mhlongo was detailed as having taken a break from the show and other brand obligations. This meant that Mhlongo was not going to be part of the live shows of Idols SA. Following the first live show, fans have already called for Mhlongo to return to his judging responsibilities. However, it seems that Idols SA will continue with the guest judges in the interim.
