South African hip-hop artist BigStar Johnson released his latest single Understand Pt. II, featuring Kaylo, on Friday, 3 May 2019.
The hip-hop lyricist released the single with the disclaimer that this is going to be the last song he offers as a single from his sophomore album, Me & Mines, which was released in 2018. Understand Pt. ll is therefore a fitting release, as the song details the journey between the release of his debut album, Tellascope, and the lessons he learnt throughout the journey of making the second album.
The rapper samples music icon Letta Mbulu’s 1976 classic Music In The Air on the production and chorus, which he sings with featured vocalist, Kaylo. BigStar Johnson uses his verses to discuss the implications of fame in his interpersonal relationships, from his intimate partner to his friends, as well as what travelling has exposed him to. The artist reconciles his conflicting thoughts with leaning even further into his faith.
