South African celebrity personalities represented the country as Global Citizen ambassadors at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City, which was held in the iconic Central Park on Saturday, 29 September.

The next Global Citizen Festival will take place at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on 2 December 2018.

Those in attendance included media personality Bonang Matheba, Samsung brand ambassador Maps Maponyane, actress and activist Nomzamo Mbatha and actress Pearl Thusi. Each shared posts and stories from the event, capturing the concert performances, red-carpet happenings and fashion trends.

Bonang Matheba, who has been selected as a co-host for the Johannesburg Global Citizen Festival, spoke briefly at the New York concert. Wearing a laid-back pair of distressed jeans and red leather blazer, Mbatha introduced Gqom artist Sho Madjozi to the stage. Madjozi, who was the only African musician included on the concert bill, performed to the crowd of 60,000 following stage appearances by headliners Janet Jackson and The Weeknd.

Matheba wrote in a post that the concert was “tons of fun”. She added that she looks forward to the Johannesburg concert in December.
