Major Lazer features local South African artists in their latest album

The latest offering from the group features strictly African artists and the group notes that the songs were compiled from their experiences during their African tour last year.

Popular electronic dancehall music group, Major Lazer has released a 17-track album with music strictly from Africa and titled it Afrobeats Mix. The compilation album features some of South Africa’s biggest names such Riky Rick, DJ Maphorisa, Babes Wodumo and Dladla Mshunqisi. The group previously featured Durban-born rapper Nasty C on their hit single ‘Particula.’

The group made the announcement on their social media pages on Thursday, 13 September by posting the track list and album cover on their Twitter page and captioned, “AFRICA TO THE WORLD! OUT NOW!”

Speaking to local media this week, Dladla Mshunqisi has expressed his excitement in being featured on the album.

“I was so excited. I really don’t have the words to say what an honour this is. When I heard my song was going to be on the project, I just fell silent and couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I think my song is something different to what people overseas might be used to it. It is Gqom, and Gqom is the future. I am taking the future of music to the world.”

The group will also be touring Africa during September and October, with a stop in Johannesburg at the Wild Waters Complex on 29 September 2018.
