Matwetwe is a local film written and directed by comedian, Kagiso Lediga, and executively produced by Black Coffee, which premiered at selected cinemas on Friday, 25 January 2019.
“You all made it happen – and because of the demand, many more screens are being added on Friday.” Black Coffee, real name, Nkosinathi Maphumulo, revealed in a tweet on Monday, 28 January, 2019.
Following the weekend of the movie’s premiere, South African stand-up comedian and the film’s director, Kagiso Lediga, took to social media to share that Matwetwe was the best-performing film at Ster-Kinekor cinemas across the country, with over 16 000 tickets being sold.
Fans and local celebrities shared their excitement over watching the movie, using the hashtag #Matwetwe on Twitter and encouraged those who hadn’t watched the movies yet to buy tickets and support South African talent.
The movie tells an authentic story about the coming of age and adventure following Lefa and Papi, best friends and recent high school graduates. Lefa is played by Sibusisio Khwinana and Pabi, by Tebatso Mashishi.
Kagiso Lediga is also known for acting in other local films and producing the 2017 local film, Catching Feelings, starring local actress Pearl Thusi. The dark romantic comedy follows a young academic and his beautiful wife, as their lives get turned upside down when a celebrated writer moves into their Johannesburg home with them.
