Mohale Motaung-Mhlongo spoke with JustNje about his new role on eTV’s Rhythm City, which caused pandemonium on social media after the show’s announcement and his subsequent debut.
Mohale Motaung-Mhlongo’s new acting role sees him portraying Kudzo on eTV’s Rhythm City, who is the head of sponsorship for a big cellphone company. The character lives, breathes, and sleeps sponsorship, and is always looking for the perfect opportunity to invest.
In an interview with JustNje on Monday, 5 October 2020, Mohale explained that contrary to popular belief, the audition process for the role was extensive and thorough. According to him, he had to deliver three variations of the character in a self-tape, and had only been notified that he landed the role more than a month and a half later.
Mohale also touched on the backlash that he received after the announcement of his casting, and stated that he was prepared for what was to come. He said that he had had a conversation with his manager regarding what the reaction would be, which is why he chose to take the high road throughout it all. Mohale hoped that people would base their opinions on his performance, and not on the narrative that he had landed the role because of his husband, Somizi Mhlongo.
He stated, “When the news broke out, we were expecting that sort of response – the backlash, even though some people were happy. I was thoroughly prepared and I was just waiting for it to happen.”
Speaking about the future of his character, Mohale revealed that Rhythm City has asked him about his availability for the coming months, indicating that his contract could be extended. For future roles, Mohale hopes to take on a heterosexual persona, as he often finds himself comfortable in playing someone who is gay. He also reveals that he plans to star in a series, and hopes that his goals will come to fruition in the near future.
