MultiChoice Group (MCG) has offered another relief effort to the South African entertainment industry by giving Soweto TV, Bay TV and Tshwane TV R1.5 million each to continue work throughout the lockdown period.

In a statement on Monday, 20 April 2020, MCG announced a relief fund to three local channels. The fund aims to assist in the broadcaster’s efforts to enable the hyperlocal media industry to function throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Soweto TV, Bay TV and Tshwane TV were the three television stations given the funding, and were selected from many others, after MCG called for all community or hyperlocal TV channels to submit their content plans.

The statement also revealed plans each television station will roll out in the short-to-medium term, and how each station plans to allocate its spending. Bay TV will be producing a new reality show titled, Ekhondweni Lobudoda, Soweto TV will be enabling new and upcoming storytellers and Tshwane TV will be using the money to assist with content generation and contribute to the station’s sustainability and growth.
