Naomi Campbell keeps contentious post on SA up

Published on

Naomi Campbell has kept her contentious post on the socio-political status quo of South Africa up, despite the backlash she has received for it.

Naomi Campbell took to Instagram on Saturday, 31 July 2021, to call for action on the alleged socio-political status quo of South Africa. Campbell’s post referenced the unrest and looting which took place recently. The unrest was sparked by the #FreeZuma protests, which were allegedly later co-opted into looting and the destruction of property, including malls, warehouses and public buildings.

Although Campbell’s post suggested that she had been educated on what is happening in the country, the nuance of the political division over the State Capture Commission, which informed former president Jacob Zuma’s no-show, appears to have not been clearly explained to her. Moreover, it seems that the nuance of the unrest and subsequent looting in the country was also not explained to the supermodel.

Hence, her post calling for Zuma to calm down the country by appearing in front of the State Capture Commission led to backlash from Zuma supporters and South Africans at large, who aimed to provide clarity on the situation. It seems that the comments on the post drove Campbell to disable the comments section, due to the negativity in most of the comments.
