25th Anniversary Essence Festival

Local musicians such as Nasty C and Amanda Black will be performing at the upcoming Essence Festival set to take place in New Orleans in July 2019.

The annual music festival, which made its debut in 1995, celebrates a magazine aimed primarily towards African-American women. The Essence Festival is known as the largest event to celebrate the African-American culture in the United States. The festival was held in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, in 2016, which marked the second time it was held outside of its city of New Orleans.

The festival features mainstream artists performing on a main stage, whilst other artists perform in the four standing-room-only super lounge stages.  In 2019, the mainstage is expected to showcase multi-award-winning artists such as Missy Elliot, Mary J Blige, Pharrell Williams and a host of other chart-toppers.

South African artists Amanda Black, Nasty C, Celeste Ntuli, Tellaman, and many more, are set to take on the super lounge stages, representing the country on an international platform. The artists took to social media to announce their involvement and each shared their excitement with their fans.

The Essence Festival uses the event as an opportunity to showcase African talent on a large scale. The event has been seen as an opportunity to ‘party with a purpose’, to empower and uplift the black community in a positive and interactive way.
