Neo Matsunyane-directed drama, Grootboom & Sons, begins to fall apart

Published on

Grootboom & Sons received backlash for its confusing third episode, which can be accredited to the directing abilities of director, Neo Matsunyane.

Mzansi Magic took to Twitter on Monday, 25 October 2021, to confirm the airing of the third episode of the newly debuted drama series, Grootboom & Sons. The first episode of the series was lauded as it saw the first formation of leading isiXhosa-speaking actresses, Zandile Msutwana and Sibulele Gcilitshana. However, following the airing of the second episode, the wheel began to fall off. First, it was the revelation of Vuyo’s death before it happened in the story.

Now, with the airing of the third episode, viewers are certain that the show is not going to live up to the expectations that the first episode set. This is as matters like acting capabilities, continuity and basic believability have been questioned. A highlight from the latest episode was the paramedic announcing Vuyo’s death by saying, “It is what it is.”

Arguably, this can be placed on the shoulders of the director, Neo Matsunyane. The surname is familiar as the veteran actor-turned-director is Connie Ferguson’s ex-husband and the father of her eldest daughter, Lesedi Matsunyane-Ferguson. Matsunyane is the director of the series, which is surprising considering his vast experience having worked on other productions, including 7de Laan, Skeem Saam, and Takalani Sesame.
