International streaming service, Netflix, has begun production on its upcoming South African original series, titled Queen Sono, starring Pearl Thusi as the female lead.
Netflix South Africa took to social media on Monday, 10 June 2019, to share behind-the-scenes images from the series’ production, indicating the official commencement of the series’ production phase on Saturday, 8 June 2019. A collection of four images was shared, showing the clipper board with the scenes’ credentials, a forward-facing shot of lead actress Pearl Thusi in a car, actor Vuyo Dabula in an intense scene and Loyiso Madinga staring directly into the camera.
The six-part series is directed by Kagiso Lediga and Tebogo Malope, both directing three episodes each. Queen Sono will star internationally acclaimed South African actress Pearl Thusi, who will assume the role of the titular character, and boasts an all-local cast including Vuyo Dabula, Sechaba Morojele, Chi Mhende, Loyiso Madinga, Rob Van Vuuren, Kate Liquorish, Khathu Ramabulana and Abigail Kubeka.
Queen Sono was co-created by Kagiso Lediga and Tamsin Andersson. The story will revolve around a strong-willed secret agent, played by Thusi, who works for a South African agency which prides itself in the betterment of the African citizens. Whilst fighting crime, she encounters problems in both her personal life and career, which results in action-filled scenarios.
Queen Sono is scheduled for release in 2020 and will be available for international distribution.
