The new short film, 2 Grams And A Sunrise, starring Nomzamo Mbatha, will be showcased with two screenings at the Durban International Film Festival, which commenced today, 18 July 2019.
The Malusi S. Bengu-directed film follows the character Zee, played by Nomzamo Mbatha, a faded gqom popstar who embarks on a new journey away from her comfortable life in the suburbs. She ventures out into the city of downtown Hillbrow, where she searches for her estranged father who she remembers faintly from her childhood. She braves the unknown surroundings of an old boutique hotel in Hillbrow Ponte Tower, but perseveres with the hopes of reconnecting with her long-lost legendary jazz musician father. As she becomes accustomed to the new area, she embraces the lifestyle whilst continuing on her mission.
The film was first celebrated at the Festival De Cine Africano in Spain in early 2019 and will now be shown to South African audiences at the Durban International Film Festival this July. Mbatha made the announcement on Instagram on Wednesday, 17 July 2019, sharing the official poster of 2 Grams And A Sunrise. She captioned the post with, “Durban I am home. We shot something beautiful and meaningful. First selected in Spain at FCAT and now another official selection at the Durban International Film Festival.”
The trailer shows Zee entering the mysterious Hillbrow Ponte Tower boutique hotel, where she is met by a curious woman. The woman asks her if she is looking for business, to which she reveals she is in fact looking for someone.
2 Grams And A Sunrise will be screened at the Durban International Film Festival on Saturday, 20 July 2019 and Wednesday, 24 July 2019.
