Original Hulisani returns to theatre after leaving Muvhango

Published on

Khathu Ramabulana originally assumed the role of Hulisani on Muvhango, but returned to theatre after leaving the SABC 2 soapie.

Khathu Ramabulana was the actor who originally played gambling addict, Hulisani, on Muvhango. However, the role was recast in December 2020, with no prior warning for viewers of the show. The abrupt change resulted in criticism and resistance to the new actor.

Ramabulana’s departure seemed to suggest that he left to pursue other acting roles to add to his already impressive list of roles. Therefore, when he left the SABC 2 production, Ramabulana did not stop working. Instead, he returned to the theatre.

The latest theatre production that he was a part of was Pass Over. In an Instagram post in early March 2021, he stated, “The play, Pass Over, explores the tumultuous journey taken by two Negro human men, in search of a promise land. The colour of their skin is their birthright – their birthright is dehumanization.”
