Prince Kaybee commented on the ongoing matter of gatekeeping in house music, with DJ Maphorisa naming the likes of Shimza and Black Coffee.
Prince Kaybee took to Twitter on Sunday, 10 October 2021, to address the matter of gatekeeping in music, specifically in the afro-tech and deep house genre. The matter was brought to the fore by producer-DJ and recording artist, DJ Maphorisa. This was after he commented on Shimza’s promotional Instagram post on Kunye from Friday, 8 October 2021. He suggested that Shimza is a gatekeeper, as he claims that he does not credit the producers that allegedly produce his beats for him.
However, it seems that DJ Maphorisa did not only reach out to Shimza, as he reportedly also did the same with Black Coffee. On the same day, Black Coffee, in a since-deleted post, shared a screenshot of a message thread between him and Maphorisa. According to the post, Maphorisa stated the same sentiments as he did with Shimza. In response, Black Coffee shared the post, tagged Shimza and called for a Twitter Space to further discuss the matter. However, as the post garnered traction on Monday, 11 October 2021, Black Coffee has since deleted the post.
Nonetheless, Prince Kaybee seemingly chimed in to support Maphorisa’s suggestions. Moreover, his slight directed at Black Coffee is no surprise, considering their past. However, it was a surprise that he also implicated Shimza.

Art was never designed to be owned by one person. We are obligated to pay it forward & ensure that the art lives beyond us. We MUST uplift young artists! That other guy can just tell Drake, “yo we have Kabza I want you to meet him”, but because he is a one man show… https://t.co/SzZYW4iWB7
