SABC 1 has confirmed that it will air the first SABC-focused Tokyo 2020 Olympics event, with South Africa going up against Japan U23 opening soccer game.
SABC 1 took to Twitter on Wednesday, 21 July 2021, to confirm that the first Tokyo 2020 Olympics event is set to air on the channel. The first event is set as the opening soccer match between South Africa and Japan’s under 23 (U23) teams. The soccer match is detailed as the opening event of the Olympics, which were delayed due to the pandemic.
Moreover, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) took to Twitter on Tuesday, 20 July 2021, to confirm that the public broadcaster will be airing the entire tenure of the Olympics Tokyo 2020, through its various free-to-air channels and its radio stations. This is as the public broadcaster has been focussed on providing sports events to the masses, following licensing agreements which, in the past, hindered the broadcaster from airing some sporting events.
The aforementioned post confirmed that between Friday, 23 July 2021, and Sunday, 8 July 2021, the public broadcaster will have interrupted viewing to accommodate the sporting event.
