Samthing Soweto’s Danko! strikes a chord with amapiano fans

Published on

Samthing Soweto released his first purely amapiano offering, which he previously dabbled in, whilst still remaining true to his distinct afro-pop sound.

Samthing Soweto, on Friday, 11 December 2020, released his new EP, Danko!. The release came as a surprise to many fans of the celebrated vocalist, who has arguably become one of the leading amapiano vocalists in the country. The EP marks the first time that Samthing Soweto has delivered an entirely amapiano offering. His last release, Isphithiphithi, straddled between amapiano and his love for exploring different sounds.

The strength of the EP lies in Samthing Soweto’s signature vocal ability. It is undisputed that he has one of the most distinct singing voices locally. Additionally, the choice to release an amapiano album highlights his musical strengths.

The matter of storytelling is an aspect that Samthing Soweto should consider working on. If you listen closely to the messaging in his songs, it starts becoming clear that one song references one from his previous releases. It seems that with his songwriting, Samthing Soweto takes the same approach as he does with stretching his vocal ability, as he merely rewrites songs from the past in different words. Moreover, the EP follows the same structure as his previous releases, making it slightly predictable.

The EP is available for purchase on Apple Music.
