Scandal! is not ending, but it is rebranding in order to have a more telenovela treatment of its stories, in light of the current local television trends.
e.tv’s Scandal! began marking its change with the departure of Patrick Mofokeng in August 2021. Mofokeng played the character of Mlungisi Ngema on the soapie. Mofokeng’s departure was first confirmed back in March 2021, when he stated that he had made the decision to resign from Scandal!. He did not state the reasons for his resignation, however, at the time of his resignation, he had already been cast as Mandla, the lead of the new Mzansi Magic telenovela, Lingashoni.
Mofokeng’s exit was only the beginning of the great purge of the current leading cast of the show. This is as Lindiwe went away on honeymoon, with no confirmation that she will return. Moreover, more recent departures include beloved characters like the Langa family, including matriarch, Boniswa; Grace Medupe, Romeo Medupe and Quinton Nyathi.
According to reports, Scandal! is revamping in an effort to cater to growing television trends. e.tv aims to compete within that demographic through the incorporation of similar television techniques. Therefore, the show recently introduced the Kubeka family, which marks the transition of the soapie to a more telenovela-like format.
