Series premiere of Impilo: The Scam tops Twitter trends

Mzansi Magic debuted its latest local drama series, Impilo: The Scam, on Monday, 8 July 2019, which was praised by viewers, leading to the show trending at number one on Twitter.

Impilo: The Scam is produced by production house A Tribe Called Story and stars newcomer Sipho Mdingi as Mnqobi, Sthandiwe Kgoroge as his mother Nokulunga and Desmond Dube as Khulubuse, the head of the household who has acquired monumental debt. The cast also includes Nay Maps and Candice Modiselle. Set in the Alexandra township, the storyline follows a community who is distraught after a pyramid scheme, developed by a select group of people, has scammed them of their hard-earned money.

Social media saw viewers praise the producers for the development of a unique and authentically South African storyline. Thularz shared a tweet, stating, “This new show Impilo: The Scam looks interesting… I love seeing new faces especially young faces on TV. Young people deserve a chance in this industry”. Others began dissecting the characters and storyline, with many taking notice of the disrespectful nature of the children.

The pilot episode of Impilo: The Scam saw Khulubuse’s dramatic return to the Nkosi household, which caused conflict and discord. Nokulunga faced challenges at work, which in turn affected the harmony of the family, whilst Mnqobi was forced to find an alternate way of saving the family.

Impilo: The Scam, premiered on Monday, 8 July 2019 on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161.
