Sho Madjozi will headline the MTN Nyege Nyege Festival in Uganda this weekend.
Gqom artist Sho Madjozi (real name Maya Wegerif) is well on her way to cementing her name as one of the most bankable South African music exports. She has just recently returned from her first US tour, having performed at Afro Punk Fest in Brooklyn, New York and at various other small events around the city. Now, Madjozi is headed to Uganda to perform at the MTN Nyege Nyege Festival happening over the coming weekend.
Madjozi took to Twitter on Wednesday to announce her arrival in Uganda. She wrote, “Just touched down in Kampala, Uganda to perform at @NyegeNyegeFest this weekend ?.”
The ‘Huku’ hitmaker then shared that she would be live on Ugandan news show, NBS Breakfast Show to speak about headlining the festival.
Later, she posted a video of the dance of the Baganda people of Uganda to show the similarities between their way of moving and her own Tsonga cultural dances. She captioned the video, “What I’m most excited about is showing yal how the dance of Baganda people in Uganda is almost exactly like xibelani! ????#Mtnnyegenyege sooo beautiful.”
The MTN Nyege Nyege Festival will take place from 6 – 9 September 2018, at the Nile Discovery Beach. The festival was inaugurated in 2015 to celebrate African musicians and performance artists.
