Fried Barry is the acclaimed 2020 South African horror film set to be made available on Showmax on Thursday, 19 May 2022.
Arguably one of the most critically acclaimed sci-fi films with elements of a psychological horror to have come out of South Africa was District 9. But in recent years, we have seen a rise in the popularity of horror films released in and by South Africa.
One such film is the 2020 Ryan Kruger directed Sci-Fi, horror film titled Fried Barry. Following its international circuit, Showmax confirmed that the film is set to air on its paid subscription video-on-demand platform for its South African audience.
Who wrote Fried Barry?
Fried Barry was co-written by South African producer, director, and screenplay writer, Ryan Kruger and fellow South African screenwriter and producer, James C. Williamson.
In addition to co-writing the screenplay, Kruger also directed the Sci-Fi horror film. Before starting with the conception and production of Fried Barry, Kruger was acclaimed as a music video and commercials producer and director.
Showmax avails critically acclaimed horror film, Fried Barry
On Tuesday, 17 May 2022, Showmax released a statement confirming that the 2020 released film, Fried Barry will make its imminent premiere on the leading subscription platform. The confirmation statement shared the premise of the film as:
“Barry… is a drug-addled degenerate who – after yet another bender – is abducted by aliens. Soon Barry is riding shotgun in his own body as an alien visitor assumes control and takes it for a joyride through Cape Town. What follows is an onslaught of drugs, sex and violence as our alien tourist enters the weird and wonderful world of humankind.”
The title character of Barry is played by stuntman, model, and actor, Gary Green, whose full name is Gareth Charles Green.

This is after the film celebrated countless accolades which includes that it has been sold “in 73 territories internationally and won 17 awards, including five Best Film awards and three Best Actor awards for Green.”
