Showmax has availed the first documentary looking into the realities of the lockdown in South Africa, titled United Apart SA – Lockdown Remembered.
Showmax took to Twitter on Wednesday, 8 September 2021, to post a reminder of the new content which will premiere on the on-demand streaming platform. Included in the scheduled new content was the confirmation of the availability of the then imminent release of the documentary, United Apart SA – Lockdown Remembered. The feature marks the first documentary which aims to look at an aspect of the current status quo in the country.
According to a supporting statement shared by Showmax on Monday, 6 September 2021, “In March 2020, with just a handful of known infections, South Africa embarked on one of the strictest lockdowns in the world. United Apart SA – Lockdown Remembered is a deep dive into our country’s official lockdown strategy and the effect it has had on society, the economy and our most vulnerable citizens.”
Moreover, the statement suggested the questions that the documentary will interrogate, stating, “Did they go too far? Can a developing economy follow the lockdown models developed for fiscally sound countries? What fault lines did COVID-19 expose? What more could have been done to effect change while fighting a devastating pandemic?”
The documentary’s advantage is that it is the first locally produced documentary that attempts to interrogate or highlight the losses and successes of the government in its handling of the ongoing pandemic. Moreover, its availability comes ahead of other documentaries by competing platforms which will also focus on an aspect of the lockdown and the way in which people have continued to live through the experience.
United Apart SA – Lockdown Remembered premiered on Showmax on Thursday, 9 September 2021, and is currently available to view.
