South African online streaming service, Showmax, brought the award-winning documentary, Whispering Truth To Power, to the small screen on Friday, 9 August 2019.
The documentary followed former public prosecutor, Thuli Madonsela, in her final year in office as she became an anti-corruption champion, seeking justice for ordinary people. The film documented her challenges with President Jacob Zuma, as she questioned his illegal use of state funds. It also showcased the advocate investigating the alleged systematic takeover of government by a private family, The Guptas, who are known to have been in cahoots with the then-president. Whispering Truth To Power also gave an intimate look at Madonsela’s life as a single, working mother of two adult children, and the generational tensions that exist in South Africa at the moment.
Viewers shared their praise for the documentary on social media, with many saying that it allowed them to witness the tremendous work ethic of the female idol. Grethe Doubell-Schüssler shared a tweet which stated, “Powerful documentary about a woman with integrity!! Thank you Thuli Madonsela for all you have done for the truth in South Africa. I feel humbled on Women’s Day.” Thandi Khaya also commented, “This is a move for all South Africans to understand the complexity of their country. Thank you for such a great film.”
The critically-acclaimed Shameela Seedat-produced documentary was originally released at the Hot Docs Festival in 2018. It acquired a number of prestigious awards, such as the Special Jury Prize, as well as numerous others at the FESPACO, Luxor African Film Festival and Jozi Film Festival.
