Showmax confirms Mbalenhle Mavimbela as Hlomu, The Wife lead

Showmax has shared the first look of its much-anticipated original drama series, The Wife, based on Dudu Busani-Dube’s best-selling novel, Hlomu the Wife.

Showmax took to Twitter on Tuesday, 19 October 2021, to share the first look of its upcoming contentious original drama series, The Wife. The show is the audio-visual adaptation of the popular local best-selling novel by Dudu Busani-Dube, Hlomu the Wife. The reveal of the first look revealed that actress, Mbalenhle Mavimbela is set to be the lead of the production in the role of Hlomu.

According to showrunner, Gugu Zuma-Ncube, in a supporting statement shared on the day, “Mbalenhle and Bonko are fairly fresh faces in the industry; there isn’t any one role or character that audiences can instinctively affix to them.” Going on to add, “As a result, they will truly embody and be known intrinsically as Hlomu and Mqhele. What solidified this decision was their undeniable chemistry: it was just electric.”

Bonko refers to actor, Bonko Khoza, who is set to play the lead male role of Mqhele. The statement also confirmed other lead cast members such as Kwenzo Ngcobo, Sipho Ndlovu, Abdul Khoza, Mondli Makhoba and Thulane Shange as the Zulu brothers. Additional cast members include TikTok star, Linda Majola, Bongani Gumede, Dumisani Dlamini, Siyabonga Shibe and Zikhona Sodlaka.

The Wife is set to premiere on Showmax on Thursday, 11 September 2021, with the first three episodes. Thereafter, the streaming service will release three new episodes weekly.
