Teboho Mahlatsi, Executive Producer of Shaka Ilembe, detailed the pre-production phase of the series, which is expected to premiere in 2021.
Teboho Mahlatsi, Executive Producer of Shaka Ilembe, joined host, Anele Mdoda, on the virtual DStv showcase on Wednesday, 18 August 2020, to provide insight into the upcoming series. Teboho detailed the complexities of filming a series based on an iconic figure, as it requires a good balance between the original story and fictional elements. He stated that the production team had contacted historians, forensic specialists, and even members of King Shaka’s family, who gave them further information to develop the script.
Teboho stated, “First of all, I would like to make it clear that this is not a remake of Shaka Zulu. We all have great admiration for that project, it was part of my childhood, but what we are trying to do is tell a story from the inside.” He also revealed that the entire series will be told in isiZulu, to make sure that it represents Shaka’s story authentically.
