The best thing to use to clean glass shower doors

Published on

A trick to cleaning shower doors in order to get a pristine glimmer on the window is through the use of a DIY solution, which is more cost-effective than using harmful products.

Showers are a quick and efficient way to get ready, especially when in a rush. While it is recommended to clean the shower after each use, in order to maintain the pristine nature of the shower glass door or divider, it is not always practical, especially when you are in a rush. As a result, the continuous use of the shower and neglect to clean or wipe the glass shower door can result in a build-up of scum.

When considering how to tackle cleaning the glass shower door, there are two ways to do so; either using ready-made glass cleaning products or making a solution using everyday products. Each has its own benefits and drawbacks. Primarily, the biggest difference between the two is that the ready-made window cleaning solution has more harmful products than the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) solution, but ultimately, the choice is yours.

Three of the best window cleaning brands

Windex Glass Cleaner

Arguably the universally preferred glass cleaner, Windex Glass Cleaner is the go-to solution for any glass surface which needs cleaning, including glass doors. While the chemical solution is said to be harmful, the creators of the solution have taken into consideration going greener as part of their selling point. Therefore, they use recycled bottle material to package the cleaning solution.

Amazon offers a wide range of the Windex product line, including the original blue glass solution spray, refill bottles, and Windex wipes and foaming wipes.

Weiman Glass Cleaner

The Weiman glass cleaner is preferred specifically for glass shower doors that have grease build-up which is proving difficult to remove through the use of a standard glass cleaning solution. Similar to Windex, the company has taken steps to make greener choices in their production of the product, as the description explains that the solution is a “non-toxic foam formula (which) foams on contact and (is) safe around your loved ones.”

Amazon currently offers the option of buying either a two-pack starter pack or a single bottle, in order to try out the product first.

Seventh Generation Glass Cleaner

The Seventh Generation Glass Cleaner is specifically for those that are looking for a greener, but still ready-made solution to clean their glass surfaces. Seventh Generation is a company that sells eco-friendly cleaning, paper, and personal care products. Therefore, the glass cleaning solution is described as unscented, free of dyes and made from a plant-based formula has no harsh fumes.

Amazon currently offers a single bottle of the glass cleaner for purchase on the online store.

DIY glass cleaning solution

For those looking for the DIY solution, there are multiple variations which have been populated. However, there is one preferred and consensually universal method used to clean surface scum off glass shower windows. This solution is preferred as it needs everyday products which are probably already in the home, namely:

  1. A bottle
  2. White vinegar
  3. Dishwashing liquid solution
  4. Water
  5. A dry cloth

Steps to take to clean a glass shower door using the DIY solution

  1. Make the solution: Using one part white vinegar, one part dishwashing liquid solution, mix with two part water in the bottle.
  2. Spray: Once well mixed, spray the solution on the glass surface and leave it to work into the scum for a few minutes.
  3. Wipe off: Using the cloth, wipe off the solution, which should come off with the scum. You can then go over the glass with a dry cloth to have a clean, pristine finish on the surface.

Remember, there are also preventative measures that can be taken to avoid scum build-up, should the hassle of cleaning the glass shower door prove to be too much. These include ensuring to give a glass shower door a spritz of water and a wipe after every shower, or avoiding using oily products like conditioners with oil base, avoiding letting soap foam build-up on the glass surface, and leaving the door open to allow for airflow.

These tricks might ensure that the time between the need for a deep shower clean is more sparse than it would be if these preventative measures were not taken. However, you will eventually be required to either use the products shared before or the recommended DIY glass-cleaning solution.
