In The Handmaid’s Tale, although June manages to escape from Canada with Nichole at the end of season five, Luke is arrested and cannot escape.
The Handmaid’s Tale has been a popular show since its release because it captures so much drama and tension.
The most recent fifth season’s finale followed this same format as it saw tensions build as June and Luke planned to escape from Canada.
Although June and Nichole make it onto a train safely, Luke is arrested at the station for a crime that he committed earlier in the episode.
Why do people watch The Handmaid’s Tale?
The Handmaid’s Tale first aired on Hulu on 26 April 2017, and it is based on the events detailed in the novel of the same name, written by Margaret Atwood in 1985.
The reasons why The Handmaid’s Tale has remained so popular despite its difficult subject matter is because of the drama, twists, turns, and absolutely engaging performances by the main characters, which all come together to create a story and plot that is too intriguing and immersive to stop watching.

The Handmaid’s Tale: Do June and Luke escape?
The most recent, fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale started airing on 14 September 2022 and aired its final episode on 9 November 2022.
This season of the show has been particularly intriguing as it focuses on the characters’ struggles outside of Gilead.
In the final, tenth episode of this season, titled “Safe,” tensions reach an all-time high as many fans of the show were left wondering whether June, who is portrayed by Elisabeth Moss, and Luke, who is played by O-T Fagbenle, would be able to escape Canada before being returned to Gilead.
Although June spent much of her story arc in the series taking a stand against Gilead, even when she made it to Canada, it soon became clear that as the face of the recent refugee migration into the country, she would have even more dangers to face outside of Gilead.
To add to this, this season has also made it quite clear that although Luke supports and loves June, he does not really understand her and her drive at times.
However, all of this comes to a surprising end in this finale episode when June is run over by a Canadian. Luke viciously attacks the man in retaliation and when the fight is finished, the man is left unconscious, and June is rushed to the hospital.
Although June is sent home to recover from her injuries, they found out that the man who attacked her died as a result of Luke’s beating and that Luke will now be under investigation.
This is part of the reason why June and Nichole board the first train at the crowded station heading out of Canada to avoid drawing too much attention.
However, this does not help, and while June and Nichole manage to escape, Luke is arrested and does not.
The relationship between June and Luke in the fifth season
As always, the fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale has been a tense one. However, many fans of the series were somewhat relieved to see Luke act out and fight back against June’s assailant in this episode, since it was the first instance in this season that he has really proved his support and love for her.
However, this excitement was quickly calmed by the fact that it was evident that killing a Canadian on Canadian soil would have dire consequences for Luke.
What will happen to Luke in season six?
When Luke and June enter the crowded train station, it is quite apparent that Luke will not be able to escape with the other refugees.
Although it is still unclear what will end up happening to Luke in the next season, and Margaret Atwood gave no indication of what happened to him in the books, fans have come up with their own theories of how the anti-refugee movement may make an example of him.
Some of these theories include a prison sentence or a beating, some possible help from Moira and Rita, or even from Mark Tuello on the outside, but until the final season airs, none of these theories can be confirmed yet.
Where are June and the others escaping to?
The reason why June, Luke, Nichole, and the others flood to the train station in the first place, is so that they can board one of the last trains to take them to the airport with the other refugees.
From here, June will likely use the tickets that Moira bought to escape to Hawaii, although she and Serena may not be completely done with Gilead just yet.
