The first edition of the Maskandi Music Festival is set to take place at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London, on Saturday, 2 March, 2019.
In a series of tweets on Monday, 3 February, 2019, organisers of the Maskandi Music Festival announced the line-up of music artists expected to perform on the day. The list includes popular Afrotainment house musician NaakMusiQ, award-winning guitarist Shushubaby, musician Ntombethongo, legendary maskandi artist Nkunz’Émdaka, singer Mbuzeni, maskandi duo Amawele ka MamTshawe, legendary maskandi musician Phuzekemisi, and multi award-winning maskandi artist Khuzani Mpungose.
Local TV personality and the host of emotainment show Nyan Nyan, Luyanda Potwana, has been named as the MC for the music event.
The Maskandi Music Festival aims to celebrate South African traditional music and create a platform for upcoming artists to showcase their talent. It will focus on highlighting the importance of Maskandi music and the role it plays in preserving South African culture through social cohesion.
The traditional music day is sponsored by national radio stations such as Ukhozi FM, uMhlobo Wenene FM, commercial radio station Tru FM, the South African Broadcasting Commission (SABC) and the SABA Group, which offers broadcasting, media and productions services.
Tickets are available for purchase at Computicket, retailing at R120 for general access and R500 for VIP. Early bird tickets are retailing at R120.
